"The
Most Depressing Day of the Year!"
~by Isaac "Ike"
Nuru
"Is the midwinter weather wearing
you down? Are you sinking in debt after the holidays? Angry
with yourself for already breaking your New Year's resolutions?
Wish you could crawl back under the covers and not have to
face another day of rain, sleet, snow and paperwork? Probably."
What an unusual title and introduction for an article on achieving
life balance- - but keep reading-it, only, gets better! I
came across this story and introduction regarding Dr. Cliff
Arnall, a British Psychologist, who created a formula that
allowed him to calculate the "most depressing day" of the
year. Dr. Arnall specializes in seasonal disorder at the University
of Cardiff, Wales, and his calculations [supposedly] show
the "misery" peak date [of the year.]
I won't bore you to tears with all of the details of Dr. Arnall's
formula except for the variables that were used so you will
have a better understanding of what went into his equation.
Dr. Arnall look at: weather, debt, monthly salary, time
since Christmas, time since failed quit attempt, low motivational
levels, and the need to take action.
After putting these variables into
an equation, Dr. Arnall found that reality starts to kick
in and a majority [British People] breaks their healthy
resolutions six to seven days into the New Year. (I
repeat six to seven days into the New Year!) The article
further points out that even the hangers-on have fallen
off the wagon, torn off the Nicotine patches and eaten
the fridge empty by the third week [of the New
Year]. And, any residual dregs of holiday cheer and family
fun have kicked the bucket by this [date].
I am glad that this situation applies
only to the citizens of the U.K. -Wishful thinking at best.
Just take a moment, I know you are busy-but take a moment-
and think about and read again the content in the above paragraph.
I don't know how this affects you, but I was both amazed and
surprise to read his findings; even though, I had heard that
many people trip and fall coming out of the "New Year's Resolution's
Starting Gate" year after painful-year. I am sure this does
not apply to you-right?
However, surely you can think of a family member, friend,
co-worker, maybe your spouse or mother-in-law (don't say that
too loud) that this article is describing to a tee. But, not
you!
This reminds me of a comedian who
said that he could quit smoking anytime he wanted to; in fact,
he stated that he had already quit seven times, since the beginning
of the New Year-- and he was working on number eight.
Sounds humorous, but unfortunately,
this adequately describes the behavior of many well-meaning
people.
So, what happens to cause people with good intention from
keeping such a sensible goal as improving their health?
In a moment, I will address this very point and recommend
some helpful resources you can find at www.power2win.com.
In the article, Dr. Arnall further
states that following the initial thrill of New Year's celebrations
and changing over a new leaf, reality starts to sink in [and]
realization coincides with the dark clouds rolling in and the
obligation to pay off Christmas credit card bills-also, he states
that up to a third [of the people] suffer from winter depression.
